Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel ran across the track immediately ahead of his car

The concerning event happened on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his damaged front wing

Competitor's Live Reaction

Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"

"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two guys sprinting across the track"

"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be authorized to just run across the track in such a way. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is actively examining the situation

"Following a turn one incident, race control was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the governing body

"During the third lap, safety personnel were informed and put on alert to access the circuit and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send personnel were canceled and a safety warning flag was displayed in that zone"

"The examination is ongoing what happened subsequent to that time"
